Bringing Europe Home

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unfocused

This week’s Photo Challenge is “Unfocused,” which is a clever tease of a topic, if you ask me.  Surprisingly, I did not have a huge assortment of unfocused photos from which to choose.  (However, if the topic had been, “Marred by a Blur in the Center due to a Damaged Lens,” I would have had quite an array of options–all, unfortunately, taken in Paris.)

Then I considered the “spirit of the challenge,” which I interpreted to mean a photo that is not sharp and clear, but that revives fond memories, just the same.  And I came across this one:

This is the path that my twins and I traveled daily (via foot or bicycle) en route to their German kindergarten.  The children in this photo are all moving eagerly towards their Kindergartenfest.  This is the only photograph that I have of that path, and although it is Unfocused, it brings back very pleasant memories of our daily trips along that wide, wood-flanked field, and I am truly grateful to have it.

  1. TBM

Love the feel of this one.

  2. I agree, some photos aren’t picture perfect but the memories remain. I have a picture of my siblings & I at my brothers wedding, the shot is very dark and I have red eye but (to this day) it’s my favourite photo of us 🙂

    • Exactly! It’s nice that even the less-than-perfect things can provide such sweet sentiment. I’m glad you have that photo, too, Girl. 😉

  3. This is very sweet. I love the motion to this photo.

    • Thank you, Becky! They are a cute and energetic little bunch, aren’t they! 😉

  4. So often we walk or drive a familiar route, yet how often is it captured in a photo… This has got me thinking! You are so lucky to have that picture as a memory! I have lived in several different places where I do not have a single photo of my home or street even! So glad you posted it! 🙂

    • Thank you, Cathy! You make a good point. It’s true that we tend to photograph the famous locations and star attractions of a place, but we don’t often take pictures of the meaningful parts of our daily lives. This photo was probably taken only because of the Kindergartenfest, but I am so happy that we do have it! Thanks for your insightful comment.

  5. That’s lovely, I can just imagine how evocative it is for you. A clever topic idea, as you say.

    • Thank you, Lorna. It did evoke a wistful smile, when I came across it. 🙂

  6. Indeed a beautiful path! I think the same thing when I take my kids to school each morning. I travel (via auto) down a beautiful stretch of desert road with mountains all around. It feels symbolic often times. The path to education…a wise and beautiful choice.

    • Oh, Margot, I love the way you put that! “The path to education” is a wonderful description.
